  I concur with your considered assessment. Apparently, the killing joke lead guitarist at the time felt similarly, as he eventually left the band when they increased the keyboards, & reduced the guitars.
  Strangely enough, after he left, the band did much better with hits like 'eighties', & 'love like blood'.
